Count on Casio Calculators, Now and Forever For 60 years, Casio calculators have been easy to read, simple to use, and durable. Today, however, we are redesigning their core identity from the ground up to create a new future for calculators. The Casio calculator of the future was developed in the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship, exceeding modern expectations for a truly indispensable device. Casio calculators are user-friendly and deliver precise calculation results. They not only make calculations comfortable—simply owning such a device brings joy. History of CASIO Calculators Casio Computer Co., Ltd. was founded in 1957 by the four Kashio brothers (Tadao, Toshio, Kazuo, and Yukio). In the same year, under the leadership of the second eldest brother, Toshio, the company developed the “14-A,” the world’s first compact all-electric calculator, meaning it operated solely with circuits and not with gears or motors. In the years that followed, the four brothers combined their respective strengths to grow the company while putting their ideals of “creativity and contribution” into practice. In 2025, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the market launch of the “001,” the first electronic desktop calculator with memory function (since 1965). Let’s take a look back at this long and eventful history. 1965: 001 [World’s First] Onboard Memory Functions This model marked the beginning of Casio’s electronic desktop calculator line. Its memory functions made a wide range of calculations more efficient. The 001 ushered in a new era of calculators. 1967: 101P [World’s First] Onboard Recording Functions (Printer) The 101P could print values and calculation results onto a paper roll, allowing users to review information later or keep records. This significantly contributed to more efficient workflows and bookkeeping. 1972: FX-1 The First “Scientific Calculator” This model supported the calculation of 16 function types, including trigonometry, logarithms, and cube roots, all accessible with a single keypress. The fx-1 was the first model in Casio’s revolutionary scientific calculator line. 1972: Casio Mini [World’s First] Personal, Compact Calculator The Casio Mini is renowned for transforming the calculator from a workplace device into an everyday household item. It shocked the industry when it was released at just a quarter of the size and a third of the price (¥12,800 [JPY]) of mainstream models at the time. 1983: JS-20 Origin of the Standard Business Calculator Series The JS-20 was a solar-powered model, perfectly sized for use on a desk or in hand. Its design focused heavily on user-friendliness and practicality, incorporating a variety of calculator functions needed in business settings. 1983: SL-800 The World’s Thinnest Credit Card-Sized Calculator By using electronic components in a film-like approach, the SL-800 achieved a thickness of just 0.8 mm and a weight of 12 grams. This model embodied Japan’s ingenuity and technical expertise, considered the ultimate in portable calculators. 1985: fx-7000G [World’s First] Calculator with Integrated Graphic Functions With the fx-7000G, diagrams could be easily displayed by entering a formula, whereas they previously had to be drawn by hand. This model contributed to mathematics education in the United States. 2010: fx-CG10/20 High-Contrast Color Display This model aimed to spark interest in mathematics by, for example, analyzing a photo showing the lines created by water in a fountain and then creating a function to describe the phenomenon. It supported learning by enhancing visual understanding through the use of colors for numerical values and diagrams. 2014: The EX Series is Born Country-Specific and Language-Based Functionalities The ClassWiz series was tailored to the curricula of various countries by adapting functionality and language to each region. This series is a collection of standard scientific calculators. 2015: S100X The Reliability of “Made in Japan” Designed as the flagship of Casio calculators, the S100X combines technology and the company’s esteemed reputation in a high-quality, user-friendly model. It is a popular choice as a gift. 2022: Ergonomic Calculators Ergonomics in Calculator Development Ergonomic Calculators were designed with ergonomic principles for vertical key pressing, with the calculator’s operating surface tilted by three degrees to fit the shape of the hand. This design offers a truly new “perspective” for key pressing. Casio’s Calculator Business in Numbers Let’s look back on the past 60 years and use numbers to illustrate Casio’s results and achievements. Casio has sold a total of 1.8 billion calculators over 60 years. Casio could only achieve this sales level thanks to the support of users worldwide. Furthermore, the company will continue to respond to market needs to develop products that make a positive contribution globally. Note: This chart is based on all calculator models across all regions. (The information is accurate as of January 2025.) 116 Countries: This is the number of countries where Casio calculators are used. This figure means that Casio covers approximately 60% of countries and regions worldwide. With models like the MJ-120GST, a checking calculator that supports Indian conventions for digit display, to scientific calculators in various world languages, Casio demonstrates significant investment in localizing product designs tailored to different regions and cultures worldwide. As Casio pays increasing attention to the global plastic waste issue, the company has launched an initiative to reduce the amount of plastic used compared to previous practices by switching to paper packaging. Casio is gradually replacing the packaging material for all its globally sold models with paper. By switching to paper packaging, the total amount of plastic used is expected to decrease by approximately 81% compared to before (based on a comparison of Casio products). As a result, the amount of plastic used is expected to decrease by about 353 tons* per year. *Based on production volume for the period from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023.
